God is not your pawn

“I speak not only to those who enjoy the blessings and consolation of revealed religion but also to those who face the mysteries of human destiny alone. The flame of Christian ethics is still our highest guide. To guard and cherish it is our first interest, both spiritually and materially. The fulfillment of spiritual duty in our daily life is vital to our survival. Only by bringing it into perfect application can we hope to solve for ourselves the problems of this world and not of this world alone”

Winston Churchil, Mid-Century Conference at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Religion is a moron’s last resort to justify actions and politicians are no different. They have always evoked religious emotions among the public either for a grandiose altruistic vision or for destruction driven by Nazi values.

Gods and Polities

Amidst the academic realms, there’s a raw, visceral struggle unfolding about religion’s place in politics. Take Leo Strauss’s “theologico-political problem,” an emotionally charged debate that asks: Should our leaders draw power from faith or from secular principles? This isn’t just academic musing—it’s a real, gut-wrenching question about the soul of political authority, echoing through history.

In our diverse, liberal democracies, the debate intensifies. Can religious beliefs, so deeply personal and often divisive, legitimately shape laws affecting everyone? The answer isn’t simple. It’s a searing dilemma, questioning the very foundations of fairness and representation.

Then, there’s the “Doctrine of Religious Restraint,” championed by thinkers like Robert Audi and John Rawls. They argue, with a passionate conviction, that religious reasons must be restrained in law-making, especially in a society rich in diverse beliefs. Their stance is a cry for moral legitimacy, a plea to base political decisions on secular, universally acceptable grounds.

But the darkest twist in this saga is the manipulation of religion in politics. Politicians, hungry for power, have weaponized faith, a move deeply antithetical to the very essence of religious teachings. This exploitation, vividly evident in campaigns like Donald Trump’s, where religious rhetoric swayed masses, reveals a chilling, often unspoken truth about the power of faith in the political arena.

From Godse to Godlessness

Throughout history, politicians have leveraged religion to manipulate public opinion, often with profound and sometimes devastating consequences. By appealing to religious sentiments, they have been able to rally support for their policies or political agendas, sometimes leading to extreme actions, including violence and persecution.

Just like how Christianity used their religion for Crusades, how Jihadis used religion for their hatred toward Western values, how Buddhist monks colluded in the killing of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, how Donald Trump evoked Christian beliefs among White Nationals to stage a coup against American democracy, India is at the verge of falling for extreme Fascist nationalism where religion will control and destroy the social fabric.

With the construction of Ram Temple as the major historical achievement of the 9 year regime, the Modi government is setting a false precedent to the world, especially to the West which has seen India as a land of spiritual diversity. People of different faiths have been living with not much trouble for centuries, although with a high degree of inequality.

After the BJP government came to power, rather than addressing the nation’s problems, their divisive rhetoric and ideologies have resurrected the buried memories of persecution and domination by different religions during various periods in history. The BJP’s IT Cell is propagating a false narrative that Hinduism is under attack.

A question for those who spread such propaganda: Should not all-powerful gods and their religions be capable of protecting themselves? Do they require the aid of mere mortals? In attempting to safeguard your faith by undermining others, are you suggesting that this is an act your god would cherish?

Are these deities, or are they mere pawns in your agenda, their perceived existence twisted to suit your purposes?

Let’s hope that, although religion has been used as a tool for political manipulation, human wisdom will persist in realizing that the core teachings of most religions typically advocate for peace and understanding. This stands in stark contrast to acts of violence and hypocrisy. The manipulation of religious sentiments for political gain often distorts the true essence of these belief systems
