While the INC released its election manifesto, Nyay Patra translated to justice manifesto, roughly a week ago, BJPs election manifesto, Sankalp Patra translated to resolution manifesto, was released on the birthday of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the untouchable who drafted the Indian Constitution.
While BJP’s manifesto underscores every campaign promise as Modi’s Guarantee, INC emphasizes on Social Justice right on chapter One. The INC manifesto goes on to say:
“Our greatest concern was the prevailing ‘climate of fear, intimidation and hatred’. In the last five years, every section of the people has lived in fear; laws and investigating agencies have been weaponised to intimidate people; and through its words and actions the BJP and its affiliates have spread hatred among people belonging to different religious, language and caste groups.
Today, the dangers that we had warned against have become a hard reality.”
BJP’s manifesto doesn’t even acknowledge the climate of fear among the minorities in the nation. It still promises Uniform Civil Code, apparently with some confusion by making it specific to gender equality. Under UCC it says,
“Article 44 of the Constitution lists Uniform Civil Code as one of the Directive Principles of State Policy. BJP believes that there cannot be gender equality till such time Bharat adopts a Uniform Civil Code, which protects the rights of all women, and the BJP reiterates its stand to draw a Uniform Civil Code, drawing upon the best traditions and harmonising them with the modern times”
Looks like there is no consensus to what encompasses Uniform Civil Code to the BJP leadership. But clearly, they want to “appease” both the liberal and right-leaning camps and so the mention of the phrase Uniform Civil Code and writing of gender equality under the controversial title.
